Background

Doherty Architects were commissioned to design a new modular Nursery accommodation within the existing school grounds of Moneymore Primary School. The proposed Nursery Unit is to be nestled into the southern side of the site, using the existing hedging and trees as a boundary to the play areas. This helps to provide shelter from prevailing wind and creates a secure outdoor play area with a strong visual connection to nature.

Approach

The building's orientation takes advantage of the solar aspect by allowing light to flood the Playroom through tall south-facing windows. The covered play area acts as solar shading, reducing direct sunlight, preventing the space from overheating. The internal layout and location of windows have been considered to allow for sufficient supervision of internal and external play areas from inner rooms and staff areas for the safeguarding of children.

Research has shown that use of vibrant colour in educational settings aid children's psychological and emotional development; for example, when children are exposed to their favourite colours, it is more likely to improve their mood and make learning easier. With this in mind, we have designed selective areas of vibrant colour such as cladding panels which turn to form louvers of the covered play area, creating a sense of enclosure.
