Background

Doherty Architects were commissioned to design a new modular SEN accommodation within the existing school grounds of Glenveagh School, Belfast. A Special Educational Need is defined as a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made. Educational provision which is additional to, or otherwise different from the educational provision made generally for children or young person of the same age in mainstream schools.

Approach

The design of the unit focuses on how the layout and facilities can be tailored to meet the diverse need of the students. This includes special attention to sensory rooms, quiet spaces, wheelchair accessibility and specialised learning areas to enhance their daily day-to-day lives. Naturally lit central circulation spaces allow young people to safely navigate between internal and external spaces, including the double height resource area.

The incorporation of green spaces, communal areas and interactive learning environments will also showcase how design can be inclusive to promote and support those with learning difficulties - To provide a nurturing and enriching environment for all SEN students.
